College Admissions Consultant in the Boston Area

Justin Neiman

Former Harvard Admissions Officer
Former Stanford Dean

Selective Admissions works with families in Boston and throughout the Greater Boston area who are navigating highly selective college admissions. Led by a former Harvard University Admissions Officer and Stanford Dean, our firm works with a limited number of students each year targeting Ivy League universities and other top institutions. We serve students in Boston, Cambridge, Newton, Wellesley, Brookline, Lexington, Belmont, Needham, Winchester, Concord and surrounding communities.

Students in the Boston area are often competing among exceptionally strong peers. In this environment, differentiation requires more than strong grades and high test scores. It requires thoughtful positioning, intellectual direction, and a clear academic narrative. Our role is to provide strategic clarity, sustained one-on-one guidance, and institutional insight into how selective admissions decisions are actually made and how students can stand out.

Understanding the Greater Boston Admissions Landscape

Greater Boston is one of the most academically concentrated regions in the country. The area is home to some of the most sought-after institutions in the United States, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston College, Tufts University, Northeastern University, and Boston University.

Students applying to top local universities, as well as highly selective institutions across the country, benefit from the region’s strong academic culture and access to exceptional resources. Admissions committees are deeply familiar with the rigor and competitiveness of high schools throughout Greater Boston. As a result, many students from this area achieve strong outcomes in the college admissions process.

Students from Boston, Cambridge, Newton, Wellesley, Brookline, Lexington, Belmont and neighboring towns often present:

  • Near-perfect GPAs
  • Extensive Honors and AP coursework
  • High standardized test scores
  • Leadership across multiple extracurricular activities
  • Advanced research or enrichment experiences

Because many applicants appear strong on paper, highly selective universities evaluate students in context. Admissions officers compare applicants within their high school and region. Differentiation becomes critical. We help students move beyond résumé-building and toward intellectual coherence. Selective admissions rewards direction, depth, and authenticity.

How Students in Boston Stand Out

One of the most common questions we hear from families is:

“How can my child differentiate themselves in such a competitive applicant pool?”

In a region filled with high-achieving students, standing out requires more than impressive credentials. A student’s academic strengths, intellectual interests, extracurricular depth, and personal narrative must come together in a way that feels distinctive and cohesive.

There is no single formula for differentiation. Through careful planning and sustained guidance, we help students work toward this goal through:

  • Long-term academic positioning
  • Activity prioritization and depth
  • Independent research and initiative development
  • Narrative strategy and essay development
  • Strategic college list planning
  • Early Action and Early Decision strategy
  • Leveraging opportunities across Boston and Cambridge

Our advising is proactive, not reactive. We shape positioning years before applications are submitted.

Boston offers unparalleled opportunities for students to engage in STEM research, medicine, finance, technology, the arts, government, non-profits, and a wide range of academic pursuits. From access to world-class universities and research institutions to opportunities for internships and real-world experience, we help students leverage these experiences to enhance their applications and position themselves as standout candidates at highly selective institutions.

Serving Students Across Greater Boston

Boston and its surrounding communities are home to some of the most competitive public and private high schools in the nation. With a strong culture of academic excellence and ambition, students in this region face an increasingly selective admissions process. We advise students throughout the Greater Boston area, including: Boston, Cambridge, Newton, Wellesley, Brookline, Lexington, Belmont, Needham, Winchester and Concord

Some of the private day schools we are especially familiar with include Buckingham Browne & Nichols School, Roxbury Latin School, Noble and Greenough School, The Winsor School, Belmont Hill School, Commonwealth School, Boston University Academy, The Cambridge School of Weston, Beaver Country Day School, and Boston Trinity Academy.

Some of the Boarding Schools we are especially familiar with are Phillips Academy Andover, Milton Academy, Groton School, Deerfield Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy, Concord Academy, Northfield Mount Hermon, Brooks School, Lawrence Academy, Cushing Academy, and The Winchendon School.

Some of the public schools we are especially familiar with include Boston Latin School, Brookline High School, Newton North and Newton South High School, Wellesley High School, Lexington High School, Belmont High School, Needham High School, Winchester High School, and Concord-Carlisle High School.

We also work with students from many other public, private, and boarding schools throughout Massachusetts and New England, including schools not listed here. Ultimately, what matters most is not the name of the high school, but how a student’s academic rigor, intellectual direction, and personal narrative are positioned within the broader national admissions landscape.

When to Begin College Admissions Consulting

For students in the Boston area, we typically recommend beginning in 9th, 10th or 11th grade. Early planning allows for thoughtful academic and extracurricular development well before senior year.

We also work with seniors navigating competitive application cycles, including Early Decision strategy and deferral response planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is college admissions from the Boston area competitive?

Yes. The Boston area is one of the strongest academic regions in the country, with many high-achieving students targeting highly selective colleges. As a result, competition is significant. At the same time, admissions officers are familiar with the strength of students coming from this area, and many are admitted to top institutions each year.

My child’s school has college counseling resources. Do we still need to work with an independent consultant?

Deciding to work with an independent consultant is a personal choice. Many of the students we advise come from schools with dedicated college counseling offices. Families often choose to work with us for strategic insight, individualized mentorship, and sustained guidance that extends beyond what is typically possible within a school-based model.

What is your approach to essays?

We believe the college essay and written materials are integral components of the application process. Helping students clarify and articulate their narrative is a cornerstone of our approach. Our focus is on developing writing that reflects intellectual direction, authenticity, and coherence within the broader application strategy.

How many students do you work with each year?

We limit the number of students we advise in order to ensure sustained strategic involvement and highly individualized support.
